Private Piano Instruction

Lessons are 30 minutes each week, held in Julie's home.

Julie uses Square, Inc., to manage invoices and payments. Invoices will be emailed to each family prior to the beginning of each month, and payment is expected by the 4th of each month. Families can pay by credit card, debit card, or bank transfer. Julie will buy any needed books and materials, and add them to your next invoice. (Julie usually orders multiple items at once, which cuts down on shipping costs.) Any enrollment fees for festivals will be added to the next month’s invoice.

If Julie has to cancel lessons for any reason, she will give a credit that will be applied to the next month's invoice.

If you have to miss a lesson, please let Julie know before the lesson start time. If she has a cancellation, she may be able to schedule a make-up lesson, although her schedule is rather full. Julie will let you know about scheduled weeks off as early as possible. Regularly scheduled weeks off include:

-
Spring Break for the Olathe School District
-
The week of Memorial Day
-
The week of Independence Day
-
The week of Thanksgiving
-
The 2 weeks that include Christmas and New Year’s Day.

If the Olathe School District cancels school, Julie will contact the affected families to discuss whether student lessons will be canceled or held remotely.

In case of a medical emergency involving a student, Julie will use her best judgment in obtaining medical care. Parents/guardians will accept the responsibility for any related expenses.

Summer Lessons/Time Off

Julie highly recommends that students keep up with their lessons throughout the year (it is amazing how much they will forget if they don't!). She understands that some students may wish to take some time off, whether during the summer or at other times during the year. However, if she holds a slot open for a student, she needs some assurance that he or she will return. Therefore, if a family decides to take a break from piano lessons, the maximum amount of time off allowed is 3 months. In addition, Julie requires a deposit, equal to 4 weeks of lessons per student, in order to hold a slot(s) open for the family. This deposit is to be paid no later than the first week of missed lessons. The deposit will be credited to the family's account and used for the first month of lessons after the student returns. Without this deposit, Julie cannot guarantee that a slot(s) will be available for the student(s) when they are ready to return.

Home Practice

Students must have an acceptable instrument on which to practice. An acoustic piano is preferable, but a digital piano is acceptable as long as it:

-
is a full 88-key instrument;
-
has weighted keys (i.e., has the "feel" of an acoustic piano);
-
has a pedal, or a way to attach a pedal accessory.

Julie does not impose strict practice requirements. However, Julie reminds her students and their families that learning to play the piano is a life-long endeavor. More practicing leads to more progress, which leads to more interesting music, which leads to more fun!

Performance Opportunities

Julie believes it is important for students to have the opportunity to showcase what they have learned during their piano instruction. Here are some occasions for students to perform throughout the year:

-
Holiday Program - Each December, Julie holds a Holiday Program, where students perform holiday-themed pieces at an area assisted living facility. Memorization of music is not required.
-
OMTA Solo Festival - OMTA holds its annual Solo Festival in March or April each year. Students perform a memorized piece of music for an adjudicator, and receive comments and a rating. In addition, students take a theory quiz appropriate to their level of study. Medals or ribbons are awarded for both performance and theory divisions. There is an entry fee for this festival.
-
Studio Performance Event - Julie's studio performance event is held the first or second weekend of May each year. Recitals have a theme (past themes include Tasty Tunes, Musical Mutations, and Amusing Music). This is an informal occasion designed to give a snapshot of where each student is in their musical journey. Memorization is not required, and the focus is on celebrating our accomplishments and having fun together.
